Are The Dodgers Out? Cade Smith closes ALDS win as Guardians roll on

Cade Smith finished the Cleveland Guardians’ series-clinching win over the Chicago White Sox by recording the final five outs, striking out four along the way. He had already been on the mound in each of the four previous games, and this one ended the same way so many of his outings have ended lately: with nobody on base and the other side running out of chances.

That is why his name keeps coming up now. The Guardians were tied 1-1 with the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Championship Series, and the next game on the schedule was Game 3, set for 1 p.m. ET Thursday after being moved up from 6 p.m. ET because of forecast rain. For a bullpen that had just sealed one series, the calendar barely gave it time to breathe.

Smith’s finish in Game 5 was not just a clean save line. It was part of a larger night in which Gavin Williams threw 5.2 shutout innings after closing out Game 4, and Erik Sabrowski came in with a 2-0 lead in the sixth, a bases-loaded jam and two outs already on the board. Sabrowski got ahead 0-2, saw the count even up, then struck out Munetaka Murakami on a heater middle down. That left Smith to take over later and close the door on the series.

The contrast is what makes the Guardians’ bullpen so hard to read from the outside and so easy to trust from inside it. Smith does not flash panic. Sabrowski said he could not believe how calm his teammate stays in those moments, and Smith has described the two as similar fastball-heavy pitchers who can still learn from each other about how to keep hitters off balance. Sabrowski, from Edmonton, and Smith, from Abbotsford, B.C., have become Canadian bullpen partners in a postseason run built on repeated high-leverage outs.

That calm is now being tested by a different kind of pressure. A team can ride one arm through an elimination game and still find itself back in a tighter series, and that is where Cleveland stood in the ALCS after the White Sox win was already in the books. The next assignment came fast, with Williams lined up against Griffin Jax in a game that had been moved earlier because of rain. Smith’s recent work says the Guardians have a late-inning answer; the schedule says they may need it again before the series settles anything.
