Jon Gosselin has thrown his support behind Collin Gosselin after the 22-year-old released a memoir that accuses Kate Gosselin of abusing him as a child. In a statement on Thursday, October 15, Jon said he could not be more proud of his son’s book and warned that people who keep calling Collin mentally ill will be held accountable.
The timing matters because the memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, came out on October 13 and quickly turned a long-running family dispute back into public view. Jon said the issue is not just what Collin wrote, but the damage done when repeated claims about his mental health are used to undercut him now.
Jon said Collin has been evaluated by multiple independent psychiatrists and that the claim he is mentally ill is false. He added that repeating it harms Collin’s reputation, his credibility and his future. That is the sharpest response yet from Jon, who has watched his son’s account move from private pain to public testimony in a matter of days.
Kate Gosselin has long denied the abuse allegations. On October 10, she wrote in a TikTok comment that rational, logical people or anyone who has dealt with mental illness understands what is going on here, and added that she had nothing to do with it. In that framing, the fight is not only over what happened in the past, but over whether Collin’s account can be dismissed as the product of instability.
That is where the conflict hardens. Jon is saying the mental health label is being used to silence his son, while Kate has suggested mental illness is central to understanding the dispute. Her attorney also said in 2024 that he did not believe she had done anything to intentionally harm Collin and said she acted to protect herself and her family from Collin’s troubled behavior. The competing versions leave one thing clear: this is no longer a private family argument, but a public credibility fight with Collin at the center of it.
For now, Jon has drawn a line around his son and around the memoir that brought this back into view. What happens next is whether Kate answers in public again, or whether the battle over Collin Gosselin’s name moves from social media comments to something more formal.
