Runescape Reignited Cancellation follows Jagex backlash reversal

Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after unveiling it, ending the planned fresh-start mode after player backlash forced a sharp reversal on October 15. Creative director Mod Ryan said the company was backing away because it did not want to repeat the mistake of ignoring feedback on a change that altered the game forever.

The cancellation is drawing attention now because Reignited had been sold as a way to bring back returning players and attract new ones, and instead became a flashpoint almost as soon as it was revealed on October 3 during RuneFest 2026. For players searching for answers today, the key question is not whether the mode was real, but why Jagex abandoned it so quickly.

Ryan said Jagex had taken over a decade to recover from the last time it pushed ahead while players objected, a reference that gave the decision its weight. In an official video and blog post, he said the studio had heard a wide range of views and concluded that it had missed the mark, adding that RuneScape should grow again only if returning and new players can join without hurting the existing community.

That puts the size of the backlash in focus. Jagex did not describe the criticism as a fringe complaint. Ryan referred to a vocal portion of the player base, and the company’s response shows that the objections were strong enough to halt a feature that was meant to give new and returning players a clean slate. The argument from critics was simple: a separate start could split the community, while the game needed ongoing updates instead of a new mode.

Jagex is not stopping its wider plans. Starting December 2, RuneScape will run a 10-day free trial that lets new characters and any character not in membership since June 2 access RuneScape Members worlds and content until December 12. The team is also releasing the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, while Plugins remain scheduled for Monday, October 19.

So the immediate answer is that Reignited is gone because Jagex decided the backlash was the stronger signal than the original pitch. The bigger unresolved question is whether the studio can keep chasing growth, as it wants to do, without again crossing the line that brought on this cancellation.
