Opta’s updated Europa League standings put Sunderland third on 16.10 points, a position that pushes them ahead of Real Union Saint-Gilloise, Juventus and AC Milan after just one round of the competition.
The ranking matters now because Sunderland are heading to Torreense on Thursday, and the projection gives an early read on how the table is shaping up before that trip. Benfica are top on 17.95 points, Bournemouth are second on 17.32, and Sunderland sit only just behind them after beating AZ Alkmaar 1-0 at the Stadium of Light last month.
That opening win came through an An Enzo Le Fee penalty, and it is the clearest reason Sunderland are so high in the model. Opta’s projection also has Bayer Leverkusen in fifth on 15.87 points and Crystal Palace sixth on 15.63, while Juventus are seventh on 15.32 and AC Milan are down in 16th on 11.17. AZ are 19th on 9.71, Torreense are 28th on 7.97 and Lillestrom are 36th on 5.44.
The spread shows how much one result can matter this early, but it also leaves a wrinkle. Sunderland are in only their second European campaign, yet they are being rated above clubs with far more continental history, while Torreense arrive with their own momentum after beating Sporting CP to win the Portuguese Cup for the first time in their history and then opening with a 2-1 win over Lillestrom.
For Sunderland, the next test is straightforward: keep the projection honest on Thursday in Torreense. If they leave with another result, Opta’s early table will start to look less like a snapshot and more like a warning to the bigger names below them.
