Southwest Airlines is adding a third elite level to Rapid Rewards and putting the unlimited Companion Pass at the top of the ladder. The new rules take effect on Jan. 1, 2027, and the new Platinum tier will require 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 100 qualifying flights.
That is why travelers are searching now. Southwest is not just renaming its elite structure; it is changing the math behind one of its best-known perks. Under the current setup, a Companion Pass can be earned with 100 qualifying one-way flights or 135,000 Companion Pass Qualifying Points, a path that will no longer include Southwest cardholder welcome offers starting in 2027.
The move is part of a wider overhaul of Rapid Rewards that Southwest announced on Oct. 15, 2026. The company will expand its current two elite tiers to three, add Milestone Rewards before Silver and again between Gold and Platinum, and reserve the unlimited Companion Pass for Platinum members beginning in 2027. That makes the top perk harder to reach, but it also gives members more ways to use points along the way.
That is the friction inside the new design. Southwest is adding more redemption options and more stopover rewards, while also making its most popular companion benefit harder to unlock. For heavy spenders and frequent flyers, the change favors those who can climb higher in the program; for everyone else, it replaces a once-broader shortcut to the Companion Pass with a narrower route that depends on elite status.
Southwest also plans to open new ways to redeem points on rental cars starting in November 2026, on international partner airlines in spring 2027 and on seat selection in late 2027. Taken together, the changes point to a program that is becoming more flexible for everyday redemptions and more exclusive at the top. The immediate question for travelers is not whether Rapid Rewards is changing; it is how many will still be able to reach Platinum once the new rules begin.
