Haas F1 is expected to confirm Rafael Câmara as its second driver for next season when Formula 1 reaches Austin later this month. If the move goes through, the Brazilian will join a team that has spent much of the season looking for a clearer answer to its line-up, while Esteban Ocon is set to be the driver pushed out.
The timing matters because the paddock in Marina Bay was already treating the announcement as likely by the end of the month, and Austin now looks like the moment when Haas chooses to end the wait. Câmara has emerged with strong backing from Ferrari, Petrobras and Claro!, which gives the young driver a profile few of the other candidates could match in the same discussion.
Ayao Komatsu had considered Leonardo Fornaroli, Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa as alternatives, but the shape of the choice points to Câmara as the leading option rather than one name among equals. That reading is reinforced by the line the team has already drawn around its own present: Oliver Bearman has scored 23 of Haas F1's 30 points so far, and a Bearman-Câmara pairing is being viewed as a workable short-term lineup.
There is also a wider driver-market angle around the seat. In Singapore, Ocon was linked with Cadillac for third-driver duties, and he finished behind Bearman after a close fight on track, leaving his position at Haas looking even less secure. Ugo Ugochukwu is expected to be set aside for rookie free practice sessions, while Colton Herta is moving close to a superlicense request after completing on-track tests.
The friction for Haas is that the team already depends on Ferrari for engines, gearboxes, transmission and other mechanical parts, even as it carries Toyota sponsorship. A driver move toward Câmara would deepen that dependence in the one area a team normally guards most closely: who gets to sit in the car. That makes Austin about more than one signing. It is the point where Haas can either settle its future around Ferrari-linked talent or keep the seat open a little longer and invite more uncertainty into the next season.
