Mattel has created a collectible Barbie doll modeled after Céline Dion’s 1998 Oscars look, turning one of her most recognizable stage moments into a new piece of plastic nostalgia. The doll recreates the signature outfit from the night she sang My Heart Will Go On, with the navy blue gown and blue diamond necklace tied to Titanic.
The timing matters because Dion, now 58, is back in the spotlight after last month’s sold-out residency in Paris, her first full-length concert run in six years. For fans who have waited through that absence, the doll lands as a tribute to a performer who has returned to the stage after revealing she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare disorder that affects mobility.
That is why the reaction has been so immediate. Some fans greeted the release with a sense of overdue recognition. One said, “It’s about time,” while another pointed out that there are already dolls tied to other big names and asked why “we don’t have the greatest singer in the world?” A teenage girl described the doll as looking “a lot like her” and called it “really, really accurate,” adding that it was “really beautiful” and that Céline Dion “deserves it.”
But the conversation has not been entirely admiring. The doll is being praised by some for its detail and dismissed by others who say it does not look like Dion, a split that is common when a celebrity likeness is reduced to a doll’s fixed face and molded features. Even so, the design is clearly meant to capture one exact moment rather than a general image: the 1998 Oscars performance that linked Dion, the song, and the Titanic necklace into a single pop-culture snapshot.
What remains unclear is when fans will actually be able to get their hands on it. Organizers at the Barbie Expo in Montreal, where Dion’s addition is being discussed, say they do not yet know if or when the doll will become part of their collection. That leaves the Celine Dion Barbie as a newly unveiled collectible with a lot of attention around it, but no confirmed place yet for display or sale.
