Kevin Atwater spent the Chicago P.D. Season 14 premiere trying to manage two lives at once, and the episode finally forced the collision. After learning that Tasha Fox was in labor, he did not pause to weigh the timing. He headed for the airport with Adam Ruzek after the call cut through a homicide case he was still working.

That is why viewers were looking for Chicago P.D. on Wednesday, October 7, when the show returned for Season 14 on NBC and Peacock. The premiere picked up a storyline that has been building around Atwater and Fox since they reconnected, and it gave the character the kind of personal turn that changes an episode in a single phone call.

Atwater had already been checking in on Fox often, certain something was moving closer. He told her, “I’m not going to call you every 20 minutes,” then added that he just felt like the baby was on the way. Kim Burgess rolled her eyes and warned, “Oh my god, you’re going to drive her insane, Kev,” while Atwater answered, “Yes, that’s Burgess,” and, “No, she’s not being nice.”

The backstory matters because Fox had once planned to leave for Miami, and before she went she and Atwater slept together. She later came back to Chicago and told him she was pregnant, a reveal that left him delighted and set up the emotional center of the premiere. The show has been laying that track for a while, the same way it has kept questions open around other cast shifts, including the kind of pressure that comes with a character deciding whether to stay or go.

What gave the scene its snap was the interruption. Atwater was helping Officer Eva Imani and the Intelligence Unit expose a corrupt parole officer, and he had already disarmed and apprehended the suspect when Fox called back to confirm she was in labor. Imani immediately waved him off and shouted, “Kev, go!” then “Go!” as Adam Ruzek offered the ride and Atwater ran for the car while Imani called after him, “Good luck!”

That leaves the one question the premiere did not answer: whether Atwater made it to the airport in time to be with Fox for the birth. The episode made clear he was ready to go, and it showed how quickly the case, the clock and the family news all caught up with him at once.
