Factual and Scotland have announced J.K. Rowling (w/t), a two-part documentary series that will follow the author’s rise, influence and contested legacy for Two, Scotland and iPlayer. The programme, made by Rogan Scotland, will use Rowling’s life to track three decades of social, political and technological change.

The timing is no accident. The is moving on the project thirty years after the publication of the first Harry Potter book, when Rowling has become one of the most recognisable literary figures of her generation. The series is built around a woman who went from a struggling single mother to the creator of Harry Potter, and whose story now sits inside a much bigger argument about Britain, culture and power.

Episode one will chart Rowling’s path from a bookish childhood and years writing in Edinburgh cafés to extraordinary success. The books transformed children's publishing, revived reading for millions of young fans and helped burnish Britain’s cultural identity. They also created a universe with an economic legacy worth billions, and gave a generation of outsiders a shared world that spread through the emerging internet.

Episode two turns to the harder part of the story: what happened once Rowling stepped out from behind the books and became a louder political voice. Her interventions on Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity have placed her at the centre of bitter online exchanges, with supporters describing her as a fearless defender of women's rights and critics condemning her as an opponent of trans equality. That split is not a sideshow to the documentary; it is the central fact that gives the series its edge.

Factual’s Simon Young said there felt like no better time for the broadcaster to explore one of the towering figures of British literature, while David Harron said Rowling is arguably one of the most influential figures in the literary and wider media worlds. James Rogan said her unflinching personal beliefs have sparked a fraught and divisive dialogue that continues to this day, and the series will draw on rare archive, Rowling’s own words and interviews with people who worked with her along the way.

What the has not said yet is when viewers will actually get to see it. The commission is confirmed, the shape of the story is clear and the platform is set, but the broadcast date is still missing. For now, the headline is not the schedule; it is that the is preparing to put Rowling’s life, work and influence back at the centre of the national conversation.
