Hulu and said Tuesday that Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl will premiere in February, bringing Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime show back to viewers on both the streamer and the cable channel. The documentary feature, directed and produced by Bao Nguyen, looks at the road to one of the most watched performances in Super Bowl history.

The film includes never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team, and it follows the show from preparation through the performance itself. Jackson opened that day by standing still for two full minutes before moving into songs including Billie Jean, Black or White and We Are the World, with more than 3,000 local kids joining in during We Are the World. The production also examines how that show helped turn the Super Bowl Halftime Show into the single biggest spectacle in pop culture.

That claim rests on more than nostalgia. The 1993 performance marked the first time the second half of the Super Bowl drew more viewers than the first, a shift that changed what halftime could be for both the NFL and the music business. It also came after a stretch that already included New Kinds on the Block in 1991 and Gloria Estefan in 1992, years when the league was still testing how far the stage could reach.

The story carries its own built-in friction. In 1993, Fox counterprogrammed Gloria Estefan’s halftime show with an In Living Color special that drew some 22 million viewers, a reminder that the audience the NFL wanted was not guaranteed. Jackson’s performance answered that pressure by turning halftime into a place viewers expected to stay for, not tune away from.

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is a Skydance Sports production in association with Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney are producers for Skydance Sports. John Branca produces for Optimum Productions, Amit Dey produces for Into the Deep End Films, and Karen Langford is an executive producer for Optimum Productions. Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy are executive producers for NFL Films. The missing piece now is the exact February date, which has not been announced, but the release window is enough to put Jackson’s halftime legacy back in play this winter.
