The Bears are turning again to Tyson Bagent on Sunday, with the quarterback set to make his second straight start when Chicago visits the Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay in Week 5. Caleb Williams is back at practice, but only on a limited basis, and the plan remains for Bagent to lead the offense against a division rival.
Bagent earned the job by holding up in last Sunday's 23-12 win over the Jets, when he completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards and helped the Bears control the game from the start. Chicago is 4-1 and trying to keep a three-game winning streak alive, with a shot at a third straight victory over Green Bay for the first time since 2005-06.
That is why this week matters now. Williams injured his hamstring late in a Week 2 game against the Vikings and missed the stretch that followed, while the Bears became the first NFL team to have three different quarterbacks lead them to wins in the first four weeks of a season since the 1997 Jaguars. Friday's limited return to practice showed progress, but it did not change the immediate answer at quarterback for Sunday.
The Bears have also built enough around the position to keep winning. Against the Jets, they set a franchise record with 34 first downs, piled up 492 total yards and held the ball for 42:45. They entered Week 5 leading the NFL in total yards per game, rushing yards per game and time of possession per game, a profile that gives Bagent a steadier runway than most backup quarterbacks get.
There are still limits on what Chicago can do. The Bears will face the Packers without leading rusher Kyle Monangai because of a toe injury, which puts even more on D'Andre Swift, who ranks eighth in the NFL with 311 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 69 carries. Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland also gave Bagent dependable targets against the Jets, and that balance is part of why the offense has kept moving.
The question that remains is not whether Bagent can hold the line for one game; he already has. It is whether Williams will be ready to reclaim the job after Sunday, or whether Chicago will ask Bagent to keep steering a team that is winning now even as its starter works his way back.
