Antonio Mohamed has spent more than ten years trying to solve one place: Estadio Universitario. As Toluca prepares to face Tigres, the veteran coach is still without an away victory there since 11 May 2016, when he last left the stadium with a win.
That date matters because it is the last time Mohamed beat Tigres as a visitor at the Volcán. Since then, he has been back eight times and has not won once, a run that includes five draws and three defeats. For readers searching Tigres Vs Toluca now, that is the frame: Mohamed is again walking into the same stadium that has resisted him for a decade.
The last time he got through that door, he was coaching Rayados de Monterrey and watched his side win 3-1 in the first leg of the Clausura 2016 quarterfinals. Carlos Sánchez opened the scoring in the 15th minute after an assist from Edwin Cardona, Rafael Sóbis equalized three minutes later, and Dorlan Pabón put Monterrey back in front in the 38th minute before Rogelio Funes Mori added the third in the 83rd. Jonathan Orozco also played a decisive role with his interventions, and even though Tigres won the second leg 2-1, Monterrey advanced on aggregate.
That win has become the exception, not the rule. Mohamed has recently beaten Tigres once in Liga MX and once in CONCACAF, both while in Toluca, but those results have not translated into success at Estadio Universitario. One of his eight visits there since 2016 ended in a scoreless draw while he was in charge of Toluca in Clausura 2026, a reminder that the venue itself has remained the problem.
So the question hanging over this trip is not whether Mohamed knows how to beat Tigres. He does. It is whether he can finally do it again in the one place where he has not managed it for more than a decade.
