Gerardo Germán Pineda, known in the ring and at ringside as El Búho, died after a lucha libre function in Mineral de la Reforma, and police detained Hijo de Fishman and placed him before the Ministerio Público. Authorities are treating the case as a possible homicidio culposo after the death that followed the estelar combat at the Centro Deportivo Cultural 11 de Julio.
The case drew attention immediately because it unfolded between the night of Tuesday, October 6, and the early morning of Wednesday, October 7, during Deslealtades, a show built around the match between Hijo de Fishman and Máscara Sagrada NG. Paramedics later confirmed that Pineda no longer had vital signs, turning what began as a live wrestling event into a criminal investigation within hours.
Pineda was not a name that appeared only on a card for one night. He had spent about 15 years as a wrestler under the name El Búho Negro II before moving into refereeing, a career that lasted almost 30 years. His work became closely linked to Hidalgo, especially to Arena Afición de Pachuca, where his presence helped make him a familiar figure to local fans and wrestlers alike.
What has not been publicly settled is the point that now sits at the center of the case: whether the presumed martinete directly caused his death. That uncertainty matters because the legal label used by authorities depends on causation, and a detention for possible homicidio culposo does not by itself answer how the fatal outcome was produced. For now, the investigation continues with that question still open.
On October 7, El Patrón Espectáculos said it would provide accompaniment and legal assistance to Hijo de Fishman during the process and that its lawyer and legal representative were in contact with Pineda’s family and their legal representatives. That response puts the ring side by side with the legal one: one man is dead, another is in custody, and the next step belongs to the Ministerio Público as it determines what happened inside a sport that is built on risk but still governed by law.
