Ceedee Lamb stats jumped again as the Dallas Cowboys beat the Houston Texans 34-30, with Dak Prescott throwing for a season-high 335 yards and 189 of them going to Lamb. The Cowboys needed every bit of it at Reliant Stadium, where they also got three touchdowns from Javonte Williams to survive a game that stayed tight until the end.
That is why Lamb's numbers matter now. Prescott kept feeding him, and the Cowboys turned 399 total yards into another 30-something-point output, their third straight game in that range. The offense has been carrying the load while the defense has been leaking points, including 30 against the Texans after allowing 28 in the opener and 34 in one of the previous two games.
The result left Dallas at 2-2 heading into Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a record that is not pretty but also not fatal in a season where plenty of NFC and AFC teams are sitting at 2-2 or 3-1. What has changed is the shape of the team. The Cowboys are scoring enough to stay in games almost every week, but they are doing it with little margin because the other side keeps getting yards too, including 347 through the air from the Texans.
Tyler Smith is part of that next step. After surgery to repair a torn left thumb ligament, he spent four weeks on IR before returning to practice, first on a limited basis and then fully during Wednesday's walkthrough. Brian Schottenheimer said Smith had been trending in the right direction to play against Tampa Bay, and Smith said an internal brace was inserted into his thumb to speed healing. His return would matter because the Cowboys have kept their offense moving, but the lineup still needs more stability in front of Prescott.
The bigger picture is still unsettled, and it is hard to miss. Dallas keeps posting points, but the defense has now allowed 28, 30 and 34 points in three straight games, a stretch that leaves little room for error even when Lamb is producing at this level. If Smith is active Thursday night at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys will be chasing a better balance, not just another big number from Lamb.
