Maricarmen Abascal death draws condolences from Pedro Sánchez after eviction

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, offered condolences on Wednesday after the reported death of María del Carmen Abascal, the 87-year-old whose eviction helped turn a housing dispute into a national flashpoint. The response came as protesters in Madrid’s Sol square held a minute of silence for the woman many had come to see as the face of the fight over homes, rents and forced removals.

Abascal had lived in the apartment for seven decades before she was evicted last week, and she was later hospitalized after being carried out on a stretcher. Her case drew tens of thousands of people into the streets in outrage, making her name impossible to separate from Spain’s wider housing crisis.

What made the story land so hard was that a way back home appeared to exist. The Madrid Tenant’s Union said on Wednesday that a historic agreement had been reached that would have allowed her to return to her apartment if she recovered enough to be discharged, but it said the solution came too late. In a separate message, the union described the situation as entirely avoidable after what it called a harrowing ordeal.

Sánchez’s condolence post on X — “All my love to Maricarmen’s family and loved ones,” and “A hug as well to all of us who feel this loss as our own today” — gave the episode a political edge as well as a human one. Her eviction had already become tied to the prime minister’s inability to pass measures aimed at the housing crisis, and it helped drive his call for early elections.

For Maricarmen Abascal, the line between a private fight over an apartment and a public protest movement vanished weeks ago. The next question now is not whether her case mattered, but how far the anger around it will continue to shape Spain’s politics after the woman at the center of it is gone.
