Dana Altman set to retire as Oregon braces for Big Ten grind

Dana Altman has decided to retire just days before the 2026-27 season, putting Oregon into a coaching change at the same moment it is trying to settle into its third year in the Big Ten. The decision lands with the Ducks already looking at a schedule that includes Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois and Purdue.

Altman’s retirement is the news that changes the conversation around Oregon right now. The Ducks are not waiting to figure out what next season looks like; they are entering it with the coach who built the program preparing to step away, and with newcomers expected to matter from the start. Jasper Johnson and Jerry Easter II are expected to play important roles, along with Forward Dwayne Artistode, Sean Stewart and Fred Payne, as Oregon tries to keep its rotation steady through the transition.

That matters because the Big Ten itself is not the same league Oregon joined in 2024. The conference is in its third season with the Ducks, and the path ahead is demanding even before the coaching change is factored in. Michigan is the defending national champion after beating Connecticut in last season’s title game, but much of the roster that carried it there is largely gone. Oregon will still have to face the Wolverines once, traveling to Ann Arbor on Jan. 19, and it also goes to East Lansing on Jan. 16 to meet Michigan State.

The rest of the slate is just as heavy. Oregon will host Illinois on Feb. 20 and Purdue on Feb. 24, with four of its final five conference games coming against Illinois, Purdue, USC and UCLA. That late stretch leaves little room for a smooth landing if the Ducks are adjusting to a new coach at the same time they are trying to prove they can handle the league’s top end.

The unanswered piece is not the schedule. It is who takes over next and how much of Altman’s structure survives the change. Until Oregon names a replacement, the program’s immediate future is defined by the rare timing of a retirement that arrives just before the season begins, when there is almost no space left to plan around it.
