Nick Sirianni said he was pleased with Cam Jurgens after the Eagles' 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but the lineman's week changed on Monday when he self-reported concussion-like symptoms. The update shifted attention from the postgame praise to Jurgens' availability and health.
Sirianni made his comments in a day-after-game news conference by Zoom, saying, "I'm pleased with where Cam is." He added that the team did not put out the offensive product it wanted and that Jurgens, like everyone else, had plays he wanted back but also had good moments. The coach said Jurgens was doing good things and, like the rest of the group, needed more consistency.
That praise landed against the backdrop of a game in which Jurgens drew criticism in social media clips. One showed him blowing up a crucial third-and-goal from the 2, pulling to his right and knocking the ball loose from Jalen Hurts before a swarm of Rams tacklers stopped Hurts for no gain. Another showed Jurgens missing badly on a block on a third-and-one sweep that lost five yards and led to a field goal.
The contrast matters because the Eagles lost by four points, and the focus on one lineman came after an offensive day that did not hold up under review. Lane Johnson also did not play on Sunday because of personal reasons, and the team did not know he would miss the game until only a couple of hours before the 1 p.m. kickoff. That left Philadelphia dealing with more than one problem up front in a close loss that exposed how thin the margin was.
For Jurgens, the key question now is not the praise he received after Sunday but what Monday's symptom report means next. The team has not said what step in concussion protocol he entered, and until that is clear, his status sits at the center of an offense already searching for steadiness after a defeat that was close on the scoreboard and rough on the tape.
