West Indies Women opened their series with an eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe Women at the Takashinga Sports Club, and Jahzara Claxton was the reason the chase never looked in doubt. She took two wickets, then stayed unbeaten on 31 as West Indies Women reached 98/2 with 43 balls remaining.

The result is already the headline from the opening T20I, because it showed West Indies Women could control a match even without captain Hayley Matthews. Zimbabwe Women were limited to 97/9 in 20 overs, a total that left them under pressure from the start and never gave them enough to defend.

Claxton did not do it alone. Karishma Ramharack claimed 3/17, Afy Fletcher added two wickets, and Zimbabwe Women were 37/3 by the 10th over and 65/5 before the innings was over. Beloved Biza made 21, Nyasha Gwanzura scored 10, Kelis Ndhlovu had 11, and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano finished with four, but the innings never found enough momentum to threaten a bigger total.

West Indies Women then put the chase on a steady track with a 38-run opening partnership, before Realeanna Grimmond made 34 and Eboni Brathwaite struck 23 off 14 balls. Claxton finished with four fours from 37 balls, and Stafanie Taylor hit the winning single to close it out. Claxton was named Player-of-the-Match for an all-round display that shaped both halves of the contest.

The awkward detail for Zimbabwe Women is that West Indies Women dominated without Matthews, and still never looked stretched. The missing captain was not needed for this one, which makes the opening result more than a routine start: it is a warning that West Indies Women already have enough depth to control the series from the front.

What happens next is the part Zimbabwe Women must answer quickly. An opening T20I is only one match, but when a side is held below 100 and chased down with 43 balls in hand, it starts the series with more than a loss. It starts with work to do.
