Minecraft is adding a new hostile undead threat for cold weather play. The Frostbite Zombie is set to arrive in the upcoming Minecraft 26.4 winter update, and it is built for snowy environments, with natural spawning tied to frozen surface biomes and Ice Caves.
That matters now because players following the latest Minecraft Snapshot and Bedrock Preview builds are seeing how the mob changes the feel of winter exploration. Frostbites do more than hit hard up close. Their melee punches inflict the Freezing effect for 3 seconds, and some can also carry Ice Balls as a ranged weapon, giving them a second way to pressure anyone moving through the snow.
The new mob has 24 health points, or 12 hearts, and can spawn with 2 armor points when it appears wearing armor. It is also harmed by Smite and reacts to the same sort of healing and harming effects that other hostile mobs do, which makes it a familiar kind of enemy even as it adds a fresh problem to cold biomes. In practice, that means the danger is not only the spawn itself but the terrain around it, where players are already slowed by snow and visibility can be limited.
There is another wrinkle. Frostbites are not limited to natural spawns in the dark or during thunderstorms. Regular Zombies and Husks can turn into Frostbites after about 30 seconds inside powder snow, which means the mob can appear through transformation as well as by spawning on its own. That makes snowy ground a risk even after a fight seems finished, because the same enemy type can emerge from a living mob that has been left in the wrong place for too long.
Melee is still the Frostbite Zombie’s main attack, and its damage scales with difficulty, while Ice Ball damage stays fixed at 1-2 HP, or 0.5-1 Heart, across every difficulty level. It can also walk on powdered snow without wearing Leat, which fits the mob’s design as a creature that belongs in frozen spaces and can keep moving where others get trapped. For now, the unresolved question is how many of the other frozen surface biomes will be added to that spawning list once the winter update lands.
