Trillionaire again: Elon Musk tops $1.04 trillion after SpaceX stock jumps

Elon Musk is a trillionaire again after SpaceX stock rose nearly 8% on Monday, lifting his estimated net worth to $1.04 trillion. The jump reversed a slide that had pulled him back under the mark just two weeks after he first crossed it.

The move matters because it changed his wealth by tens of billions of dollars in a single day. Musk’s net worth climbed from $976.9 billion, and he remains far ahead of the field even by billionaire standards. The estimate now puts him about $1 billion above Larry Page, who is described as the world’s second-richest person.

Musk’s fortune is tied heavily to SpaceX, where he owns around 4.76 billion shares and another 1.3 billion shares of unvested restricted stock. Morgan Stanley analysts called the stock cheap at Monday’s prices, pointing to future AI product releases, progress on Starship and new neocloud contracts. In other words, the market is not just pricing what SpaceX has done; it is betting on what it may sell and launch next.

That is why the number can move so fast. Musk first hit a 10-figure net worth in June when SpaceX went public and shares soared, making him the first person in history to surpass $1 trillion in wealth. But the same stock that lifted him then also knocked him back below the threshold two weeks later. Between June 16 and June 24, his fortune fell from $1.32 trillion to $957 billion, according to the Billionaires Index, and by the start of August it had dropped to $683.6 billion.

The swings underline how concentrated Musk’s wealth is in assets that can reprice in hours. Beyond SpaceX, he holds about $156.6 billion in Tesla, $13.1 billion in The Boring Company and $3.42 billion in Neuralink. Larry Ellison briefly overtook him as the richest person in the world last year, only for Musk to regain the lead after a $35 billion gain. That kind of whiplash is what turns a fortune into a moving target rather than a fixed ranking.

Even the math around his wealth points to the same scale. There are roughly 8.3 billion people on earth, and if Musk gave each one $89.40, he would still have $298 billion left. That amount is about $1 billion more than Larry Page’s estimated net worth. The comparison shows how far above the next tier Musk sits, even after the latest round of reversals and recoveries.

The open question is not whether Musk can cross $1 trillion again; he already has. It is whether SpaceX can hold Monday’s gain long enough to keep him there, or whether the next market move sends the number sliding the other way once more.
