Is Mike Evans Playing Week 4? 49ers list him questionable vs. Broncos

Mike Evans is going into Week 4 as a question mark. The 49ers listed him questionable for Sunday against the Denver Broncos after he worked through a ribs injury and returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday.

That is the reason this matchup is drawing so much attention now. Evans missed Wednesday and Thursday before getting back on the field late in the week, and his availability matters because the 49ers are trying to sort out their receiving group before they face Denver at Levi's® Stadium.

Kyle Shanahan made the uncertainty plain. He said Evans would be a game-time decision and added, “Hopefully we’ve got a shot,” when asked about his availability. The team will not give the final answer until 90 minutes prior to kickoff, which keeps the decision right where the 49ers would prefer not to have it: at the edge of the start of the game.

That delay matters because the rest of the injury report is not clean either. Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr. and Mykel Williams were ruled out, while Dre Greenlaw, Keion White and Jaden Dugger were also listed as questionable for Sunday. The 49ers are not dealing with one isolated absence; they are managing several moving parts at once.

Evans’ ribs injury came in the 49ers’ Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals, and his week followed a familiar pattern for a player trying to push through pain: no practice on Wednesday, no practice on Thursday, then a limited return on Friday. By the time the final practice of the week wrapped up, the only honest description left was the one Shanahan used — the team still has a shot, but it does not yet have a final answer.

There is another wrinkle in the week’s roster movement as well. Brandin Cooks was promoted to the active roster on Wednesday after signing to the practice squad on September 23, giving the 49ers another option if Evans is held out. For now, the clearest answer is that Evans has not been ruled in or out, and the decision that matters most will come close to kickoff.
