Aaron Murray is getting ready to call his first Georgia game on Saturday on the SEC Network, and he did not ease into the assignment. He drew a direct line between Jared Curtis and Matthew Stafford, saying the Georgia quarterback reminds him of one of the program’s biggest names before Georgia Vs Vanderbilt.
Murray said Curtis throws with effortless arm angles and a level of command that jumps off the screen. He added that the quarterbacks both can make every throw in the book and are as tough as quarterbacks come, a comparison that helps explain why Curtis, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class, has already become such a talking point.
The comparison carries weight because Murray is not speaking in the abstract. He is a former Georgia quarterback preparing to return to the broadcast side for a game involving the program, and Stafford remains the standard for what the position can look like when talent, poise and arm strength meet. Stafford was the No. 1 quarterback in the 2006 class and later proved himself at Georgia and during a long NFL career.
That is also why the comment lands with some friction. Curtis may share traits with Stafford, and he may even be a better runner than Stafford if needed, but it is still far too early to place him beside a quarterback who has already built his résumé. Curtis is a capable runner, yet the gap between promise and proof is exactly what makes Murray’s remark so sharp.
For Georgia fans, the timing makes the comparison hard to miss. Murray’s first broadcast comes on Saturday, the same day the conversation around Curtis will be waiting for another layer of evidence. If Curtis flashes the throwing touch and control Murray described, the Stafford comparison will keep growing louder. If he does not, the line will read less like a verdict than a reminder of how much still has to be earned.
