Taco Bell and Duolingo are putting Duo Habanero Sauce on menus for National Taco Day on Oct. 6, turning a one-day food promotion into a cross-border push that reaches seven countries. The limited-edition sauce is described as tangy, fruity and built around habanero heat, and it will be available at participating Taco Bell locations while supplies last.
The draw in the U.S. is straightforward: customers can get one free packet with the purchase of a Doritos Locos Taco, and extra packets cost $0.20 each. Taco Bell Rewards members can also claim one free month of Super Duolingo through Oct. 6, with redemption codes usable through Nov. 15. For readers looking for the launch, that is the core of it: a single-day food tie-in with a digital bonus attached.
What makes the promotion unusual is the way it stretches far beyond one menu item. The packets carry taco-themed sayings in English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese, German, Korean, Mandarin and Japanese, a sign that the campaign is being built as much around language as around heat. Luis Restrepo said National Taco Day is about more than just food, and said the fact that the word taco is understood in more than 30 languages shows how universal it is. He said Taco Bell and Duolingo are using that shared word to invite more fans into the Global Taco Day celebration.
That is also where the pitch widens beyond the holiday itself. Emmanuel Orssaud said language and food are two of the most powerful ways people connect with culture and with each other, and called taco a rare word that travels easily across cultures. The collaboration uses that idea to promote Duolingo subscriptions at the same time it marks National Taco Day, a reminder that the campaign is doing more than handing out sauce packets.
Taco Bell has been using National Taco Day for bigger moves for several years now. The chain introduced a month-long taco subscription in 2022, worked to free the phrase Taco Tuesday from trademark restrictions in 2023 and partnered with National Day Calendar in 2024 to move National Taco Day to the first Tuesday in October. This year’s rollout keeps that pattern going, with Duo Habanero Sauce available only while supplies last and the strongest question left being how quickly participating locations will run through their packets.
