Zinedine Zidane has named Kylian Mbappé as France captain and said he wants him on the left side of the attack, a clear first message from the new manager as he begins his first roster period with the team.
The decision lands just as France turns toward a packed September-October stretch that includes Türkiye, Italy and Belgium twice. That run is the immediate test of Zidane’s authority, and Mbappé will carry it with the armband.
RMC Sport reported that Zidane also spoke privately with Mbappé to set out his intentions for the coming fixtures. Zidane has gone further than a simple captaincy call: he also picked a four-man leadership group that includes Ousmane Dembélé, Adrien Rabiot and Jules Koundé, a sign that the captaincy will be shared around the group even as Mbappé sits at the top of it.
The football detail is just as revealing as the hierarchy. Mbappé has played on the left wing in 32 of his 106 France appearances since his debut in 2017, and that is where he has produced 21 goals and 16 assists for his country. Yet he has spent much of his recent time as a center forward for club and country, including after his move to Real Madrid in 2024, which makes Zidane’s preference a notable shift rather than a routine selection call.
That preference also echoes back to an earlier version of Mbappé’s France role. He lined up on the right side of a 4-2-3-1 during France’s World Cup win in 2018, but his profile has changed since then. Last season he scored 58 goals in 60 games across club and country, finished as top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and at the 2026 World Cup, and arrived at this point with even less room for doubt about where he can hurt opponents.
Zidane’s plan is therefore not just about where Mbappé stands on the team sheet. It is about whether France’s most decisive player can be pulled back toward the left without blunting the attack, and whether the manager can use his other options without turning the setup into a compromise. The answer will begin to emerge over the next six games, with Mbappé captain, Mbappé wide, and France under immediate pressure to make both decisions look natural.
