The Alabama senator and former college football coach made the remarks while he is running for state governor in the Nov. 3 general elections, which helps explain why the speech was drawing attention now. Tuberville did not give any evidence for where the claim came from, even as he repeated it as if it were fact.
He said that many airline pilots, flight attendants and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community, then went further and called for mental institutions to be brought back as a normal part of society. Tuberville’s comments fit that broader anti-transgender campaign aimed at LGBTQ rights, even though the furry community is not the same thing and is widely misunderstood and stigmatized.
Doug Jones, who heard the speech after the fact, said it was the strangest speech on the floor of the United States Senate that he had ever heard. That may be the clearest measure of how far Tuberville pushed the moment: he made an extraordinary allegation, offered no proof, and left the next question hanging over his campaign — where, exactly, did he get it?
