Cal Raleigh added the clearest edge in the batter’s box. He had posted a.478 ISO and a 35.7% barrel rate over the last 25 games, and he had gone 3-for-7 in career at-bats against Javier with one home run. That kind of power profile mattered against a pitcher whose recent line was solid but not overpowering, especially when the betting case for Seattle leaned on contact quality as much as on the starter.
The one wrinkle was Gilbert’s own recent run. His raw results had not looked dominant, but his underlying numbers over the last month were better than they appeared on the surface, and he had been even sharper over 10 starts against bottom-10 teams in xwOBA, posting a 2.76 ERA and 2.33 xERA. That was the part of the matchup that could decide whether Seattle justified the favorite’s price or left the door open for Houston to steal a game it was not projected to control.
For all the betting angles and team splits, this still came down to one Tuesday night start. If Gilbert turned his underlying edge into a clean outing and Raleigh kept driving the ball, the Mariners had the kind of matchup that can settle quickly. If not, the numbers that pointed Seattle’s way would be left waiting for another night.
