Kelly Clarkson turned a fashion moment into a coaching pitch on the Sept. 21 Season 30 premiere of The Voice, handing 21-year-old Hazel Gerson a clip-in hair extension before Gerson chose Team Kelly. The move helped Clarkson beat out Riley Green for the singer after both coaches turned for her during her performance of Alex Clare's "Too Close."
The exchange gave the season's opening night a memorable hook, and it came as NBC launched the new run as a three-night premiere event with Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine back in the red chairs alongside Riley Green and Queen Latifah. For viewers following the Blind Auditions, it also marked the first clear team win of the season for Clarkson.
Gerson interrupted Clarkson's pitch to compliment her long hair, prompting Clarkson to explain that the length came from clip-in extensions and to offer one to the singer. Clarkson told her, "Thank you! I'll give it to you. It's clip-in. You can have it!" and then added, "I will share. Don't you want a coach that will share with you?"
That was more than a joke. In a format where singers choose between coaches only after turns are made during the audition, the offer gave Clarkson a personal edge in a head-to-head with Green. He was not shy about the competition either, saying, "I'll be honest with you. I saw this hair up close and I don't know if you want it," before Gerson made what she called an easy choice and went with Clarkson.
Green's pitch had already complicated the decision. Gerson had to weigh two coaches who wanted her, while Clarkson was also carrying an earlier win from the same premiere after turning for 19-year-old Alabama singer Joe Henley. Henley sang Travis Tritt's "Anymore," then later picked Team Riley after Green joined him for a verse of "My Way."
The premiere footage was taped before viewers saw it, which matters because Clarkson had recently appeared publicly with a shorter brunette bob. That earlier look made the clip-in extension moment land even harder on broadcast night, when the show was still in the first stretch of its season-opening run.
Blind Auditions continue with one-hour episodes on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT before the series returns to its regular schedule. For now, Clarkson has the first artist on Team Kelly, and the season's opening night already has the kind of odd, personal pitch that can stick with viewers long after the music ends.
