Trader Joe's says its Halloween tote bags will be back in stores beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30, and the draw is already obvious: the Trick-or-Treat Mini Canvas Totes are returning in black, green, purple and orange.
That is enough to send shoppers hunting early because the bags are small, seasonal and limited-time, the exact mix that turned the line into a collectible. The totes measure about 13 inches long, 11 inches tall and 6 inches deep, which makes them large enough for candy-collecting adventures, quick grocery runs or a small haul, but still compact enough to vanish fast once they hit shelves.
Genossteaks was among the first to react online after spotting the bags. She wrote, “Guess what they just happen to have today?” and followed it with, “Halloween bags. Halloween bags. Of course I had to get one of every color. I almost got two because of the way that y'all be asking me for some whenever there's a new drop.” In another post, she urged people to “run to their nearest Trader Joe's, literally immediately,” adding, “we all know how this always goes.”
The timing matters because the bags first went viral in March 2024 and have only picked up more momentum since then. Trader Joe's has turned the mini totes into part of a broader collectible bag lineup, and the company has said it only sells its products inside its stores. That has not stopped versions from showing up on international marketplaces including Coupang, Depop, Karrot, eBay and Mercari, with resale prices sometimes climbing above $1,000.
Trader Joe's said in June that it was aware some knockoff totes were being sold online and that it had recently filed a lawsuit to protect customers from being misled. The company repeated that warning more recently, saying it had filed suit to protect shoppers from counterfeit versions. The gap is still the one shoppers care about most: Trader Joe's has set the launch date, but it has not said how many bags will be in stores or whether any color will be more plentiful than the others.
For customers who want one, the clock is short. The Halloween mini totes are due in stores on Sept. 30, and if past demand is any guide, the real question is not whether they will sell, but how quickly the shelves will empty.
