Dan Campbell’s deal with the Detroit Lions now runs through the 2027 season after a one-year extension signed in March 2024. The move keeps the Lions head coach tied to Detroit on a clear multi-year timetable, with his pay at around $4 million a year.
That salary helps explain why Campbell is being discussed as one of the highest earners in the NFL coaching ranks, even if exact comparisons vary by team and contract structure. On the numbers available, his current compensation is far above the roughly $1.5 million he made annually with the New Orleans Saints, and it has helped lift his net worth to around $3.5 million.
The contract update matters because it gives the Lions stability at a job where timing often changes quickly. Campbell signed a new six-year deal with Detroit in 2021, then added the March 2024 extension that pushed the end point out to 2027. Read together, those terms point to a relationship that was renewed rather than restarted, even if the paperwork has been described in more than one way.
Campbell’s path to that point ran through several stops before he became the face of Detroit’s sideline. Born Daniel Allen Campbell in Clifton, Texas, on April 13, 1976, he first appeared in pro football in 1999 after being drafted by the New York Giants and made his NFL debut against the Arizona Cardinals. He later played for the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints before retiring in 2011, then moved into coaching in 2010 as an intern with the Miami Dolphins and later served as the tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2016 to 2020.
He has also been visible away from the field, including advertisement work for Dr Pepper and Pepsi. NFL fans will get another chance to see the Lions in action tonight against the Bills in Buffalo, with Campbell still at the center of the team’s plans and under contract for several more seasons unless the numbers change again.
