Jameson Williams did not hide from the mess after the Detroit Lions beat the New Orleans Saints 31-30 in overtime. On Tuesday, he said he did not capitalize the way he knows he can, a plain admission that fit the tone of a debut that included three drops, a fumble on an end-around and a role in the winning drive.
That is why Williams is being searched now. He caught a 22-yard pass in overtime that helped set up the winning touchdown and point-after attempt, but the same game left him with four catches for 45 receiving yards on nine targets, according to Pro Football Reference. The contrast was sharp enough that Williams said he did not think it was too good, even after he helped the Lions improve to 1-0.
Williams tried to move past the performance quickly. He said he was not really focused on what he did after the game was over and pointed instead to the result, saying, “We got a big win. That was a good win. We’re 1-0.” For a receiver who has topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last two seasons, the numbers from Sunday mattered because they landed against a player whose hands were already under a spotlight after he led the NFL with 12 drops in 2025.
That is the part the Lions cannot fully separate from the rest of the offense. Jared Goff said after the game that he was not worried about Williams in the slightest, and Dan Campbell echoed that view on Tuesday, saying he was not concerned. Campbell added that nobody was more frustrated than Williams, but said the receiver bounced back, got back in the huddle and kept going instead of sulking. That matters more than the box score when a coach is trying to judge whether a rough night is a one-off or part of a pattern.
The unanswered piece is not whether Williams can make a play; he already did that when the game was on the line. It is whether the drops were a matter of timing, technique or just one bad Sunday, because the Lions are already moving on and were set to play Buffalo on Thursday. Tuesday’s practice report added more moving parts around the roster, with D.J. Reed and Juice Scruggs limited, Blake Miller and Christian Mahogany sidelined for the second straight day, and Christian Izien logging a second consecutive full practice after missing the season opener. For Williams, the next test comes fast, and so does the next chance to make the conversation about the catch instead of the misses.
