Owen Ndlovu was found dead on Wednesday, hours after he was abducted when his vehicle was hijacked in a township near Johannesburg. Witnesses said the 54-year-old had gunshot wounds, and police began searching for three suspects as the case quickly moved from abduction to murder.
Ndlovu was seized on Tuesday while collecting his wife from a church in Katlehong. His body was later discovered beside a road in Thokoza, with a bag found a few metres away, and the vehicle was recovered abandoned in Walkerville. The sequence left little doubt that this was a violent killing, even though police said a post-mortem examination would still establish the formal cause of death.
The death has pulled attention back to South Africa's violent crime problem, but it also cut through a smaller, more personal world: Ndlovu had been a familiar voice to sports fans after years at the SABC, where he worked as a presenter and producer and covered the Premier Soccer League. He later became an advocate for musicians' rights and royalty payments, and was associated with Artists United and the SABC Summer Song of the Year initiative.
That public career is one reason the killing has landed so hard. Lelo Mzaca described him as a man who lived a colourful, energetic life and said he brought enthusiasm and flair to sports broadcasting, while Eugene Mthethwa said the family was devastated and waiting for more information from the relevant authorities about the circumstances of Owen's death. The motive for the abduction and killing has not been established, and that silence sits at the centre of the case now.
For now, police are treating the case as murder and trying to find the three suspects who took him. The post-mortem may settle the medical cause of death, but it will not answer the harder question hanging over the family and investigators: why Owen Ndlovu was singled out at all.
