Angel City FC gets another swing at the playoff race on Wednesday night, hosting Seattle Reign FC at BMO Stadium with both teams still in the thick of it. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. PT and will be shown on NWSL+, with Angel City also using the night to mark Native American Heritage Night presented by Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation.
The timing is what gives this one its weight. Angel City enters ninth after a 3-3 draw with Denver Summit FC on Friday, Sept. 11, while Seattle remains in the final playoff spot and holds a four-point cushion. That gap means Angel City needs more than a clean performance; it needs a result that closes ground on the team sitting just above it. A win would cut the deficit to one point and change the shape of the chase immediately. A draw would leave the line where it is.
Angel City has already shown it can recover from a bad stretch inside a match. Against Denver, it led 1-0 at halftime on Maiara Niehues' goal in the 44th minute, then fell behind 3-1 before rallying back to level the score. Sarah Gorden earned her third career NWSL assist on the opening goal, Prisca Chilufya scored one minute after coming on in the 62nd minute, and Sveindís Jónsdóttir set that up before Ally Sentnor converted a penalty in the 74th minute. Chilufya has now been voted ACFC's Player of the Match twice in the last three matches, a sign of how central she has become to the comeback push.
The rematch also carries recent history. Angel City and Seattle Reign FC drew 2-2 at Lumen Field on Aug. 9, 2026, when Gisele Thompson and Chilufya scored for Angel City and Sally Menti and Mia Fishel answered for Seattle. Both clubs have leaned on defense for much of the season, with Angel City allowing 27 goals and Seattle 26, but the numbers do not hide the pressure on the table. Seattle's Maddie Mercado has eight goals this season, while Angel City's attack has been spread across Niehues, Jónsdóttir and Chilufya, who have 20 goals combined.
This is the kind of match that can decide whether Angel City is chasing the final playoff place or pulling level with it. The margin is still only four points, but Wednesday is the first chance to shrink it. If Angel City cannot do that at home, the path gets narrower fast.
