The Yankees designated Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment on September 16, 2026, ending his place on the roster and clearing room for Clarke Schmidt, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and took the spot.
The move matters because Cabrera is not a fringe name with no market value. He is 27, has filled a utility role for the Yankees since the 2023 season, and still carries enough defensive versatility to cover every position on the field other than catcher. He is also inexpensive at $1.2MM this season, a combination that can draw attention when a club wants depth without a long commitment.
Cabrera’s name is also being searched now because he had been productive in Triple-A this year. In 520 plate appearances with the Rail Riders in 2026, he hit.289/.346/.447 with a 106 wRC+, 19 home runs and 11 steals. He also posted an 8.5% walk rate and a 20.4% strikeout rate, numbers that suggest the bat did enough to keep him in the conversation even after he was limited to 11 major league plate appearances.
That is the part that makes the decision harder to explain away. Cabrera spent most of the 2025 season sidelined after a gruesome injury while tagging on a sacrifice fly, and testing showed a fracture and ligament damage. He had surgery a couple of days later and missed the rest of that season, then spent the bulk of 2026 back in Triple-A. A player who can hit there, run a little and move anywhere on the field usually survives on a roster built around flexibility. This time, the Yankees still chose to move on.
If Cabrera clears the process, he will not disappear from the picture. Outright waiver priority runs by reverse standings, and the Rockies would get the first crack, followed by the Angels, A’s, Giants and Royals. Another club could claim him, keep him at the same salary in 2027 if it tenders him a contract, and hold him for three additional seasons. If he is not claimed, the Yankees will have answered a short-term roster question, but not the longer one about why a useful, controllable utility player was the piece they chose to remove.
Cabrera appeared to understand how much support he still has. After receiving thousands of messages from family, friends, fans, agents, coaches and teammates, he said he dropped the phone on the bed, smiled, and thought about how blessed he was to be surrounded by that much love.
