Week 2 arrives with the NFL already leaning hard on backup quarterbacks, and that has turned Nfl Fantasy Football into a moving target. Tua Tagovailoa’s oblique strain has put his status in doubt, while the Falcons still do not have Michael Penix Jr. ready for live game action, leaving Atlanta to keep sorting through quarterback options.
That matters now because the season is barely underway and fantasy managers are already trying to read who will actually be under center. Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano have been calling around for the latest buzz, and the answer across the league is the same: uncertainty is driving the conversation. The Seahawks, Vikings and Falcons all had to turn to backup quarterbacks in Week 1, which made every injury report feel larger than it normally would this early in the schedule.
The clearest sign of how quickly things can shift came in Atlanta, where the club used a third-string quarterback in Week 1. The Falcons’ best option remains Michael Penix Jr., but he is still not ready for live game action after left ACL surgery in November. He wants to be fully confident before stepping back onto the field, and the Falcons are leaving that comfort level up to him.
That leaves the team in a strange place. Kevin Stefanski has a quarterback situation on his hands in Atlanta, even as the Falcons continue to weigh the possibility of better play later rather than sooner. Penix’s recovery is the long-term answer, but it is not a Week 2 answer, which is why the backup path keeps hanging over the team.
Seattle is facing its own version of that problem. Sam Darnold will miss this week and possibly Week 3, and the Seahawks have not put him on short-term injured reserve. The club believes Drew Lock is plug and play until Darnold returns, and Lock is expected to be the quarterback for the foreseeable future in Seattle. Jalen Milroe is expected to be active as the second quarterback, though any role for him will depend on how the game unfolds rather than on a separate package built around him.
Elsewhere, the early-week quarterback picture is still fluid. Kyler Murray will start if he clears concussion protocol in time, but Carson Wentz is likely to start if Murray is not clear in time. Wentz had been hot last week versus Green Bay, while J.J. McCarthy was the emergency third quarterback on Sunday. Chicago also allowed 361 passing yards to Bryce Young, another reminder that fantasy outcomes this early can swing fast when the quarterback plan changes.
For now, the biggest unresolved piece is Tagovailoa’s availability, because an oblique strain can change the entire shape of a game plan without much warning. The Falcons may eventually turn to Penix, but until he is ready to play full-speed football again, the safer read is that Atlanta’s best option is still waiting on the sideline.
