Bo Nix is set to play Monday night against the Chiefs after multiple procedures on his right ankle, giving the Broncos their starter back for one of the season’s biggest games at Arrowhead Stadium.
The timing matters because the matchup is not just about one quarterback’s recovery. Patrick Mahomes is also coming back from a more serious ACL repair on his left knee, turning this into a meeting of two passers trying to prove they are ready before the rest of the league decides otherwise.
Nix has already shown how much this stretch means to him. He watched the AFC Championship Game in a boot, and he has 25 wins in two seasons at age 26, a résumé that has given the Broncos confidence even after last year’s ugly finish against the Colts. That loss came after he threw a bad pick and the Broncos fell on a walk-off field goal following a leverage penalty, the kind of ending that hangs around a quarterback until he changes the next chapter.
Sean Payton also expects the game to be played in the elements, saying the Broncos could face 20-mph gusts early. That would push the focus toward the run game, with J.K. Dobbins among the players the Broncos may lean on while Nix manages the ankle and the ball comes out fast.
There is also reason to think Nix will have some help at the line. Davis Webb is expected to keep the play calls shorter and give Nix more time to read the defense before the snap, something that should matter if the ankle limits how long he can hold the ball. Webb said some calls are like reading Green Eggs and Ham because Nix already knows them by heart, while others are more like the fourth Harry Potter book, a reminder that the game plan will still ask him to process on the fly.
Still, the sharpest measure of where Nix is right now may be the voice inside the locker room. Emmanuel Sanders said that when the nine captains recently spoke, Nix stood up with a fire to him and made it clear that last year does not matter. The Broncos need that edge on Monday night, because the margin against the Chiefs is never wide and Mahomes has a seven-game home win streak against Denver. If Nix looks limited, the game could tilt quickly. If he looks like himself, the Broncos will have a real chance to leave Arrowhead with more than just a healthy quarterback.
