Mike LaFleur walked into his first regular season as Arizona Cardinals head coach with a simple message for his team: tune out the noise and play. With the Chargers in L.A. on deck, the Cardinals are stepping into the kind of game that starts answering whether this roster can turn a new voice into real results.
LaFleur did not frame it as blind ignoring. He said, “Listen, ignore might be the wrong word,” then added, “Really, it’s more (being) above the noise.” His point was plain. The outside talk will come whether the team is being doubted or praised, and neither should reach the locker room. “This is a week-to-week league,” he said, “and our focus is going to be 1-0 every single week, and above all that is playing good football.”
That message lands now because the Cardinals begin the season with significant outside doubt hanging over them. LaFleur’s offense was described as his strength and looked good in the preseason, but none of that matters once the games count. The first test comes immediately against the Chargers, and the way the team handles the first real snap under a new coach will matter more than any offseason optimism.
Dante Stills sits right in the middle of that pressure. He is listed as the starter ahead of Darius Robinson on the depth chart, but the defensive line is expected to rotate multiple players, which means nothing is locked in. Stills put it bluntly: “At the same time I have to go out there and show why I belong up there.” He added, “It’s all great before the season, ‘Oh, look, he’s the starter!’ But I have to produce on how I know I can.”
There is also a roster note behind the scenes that shows how much remains unsettled. Monti Ossenfort said Friday that Josh Sweat had an offseason procedure, and Sweat returned to full work in the open part of practice. Carson Beck, meanwhile, is listed as QB3 and will be dressed as the emergency third quarterback against the Chargers. None of that changes the basic task in front of LaFleur: keep the room steady, keep the focus narrow, and see whether the Cardinals can make the first game under their first-year coach look like the start of something real.
