The Dolphins head into Sunday's season opener against the Raiders with one question hanging over every other one: how much should anybody read into the first game? In part 1 of a Miami Dolphins On SI mailbag, the answer is less than the final score might suggest, even if the result turns into a blowout at Allegiant Stadium.
That is why De'von Achane is being searched now, because the opener is the first chance to see whether the Dolphins are moving in the right direction or just starting another season with noise around them. A win would matter. A blowout win would matter more. But the point is not to turn Week 1 into a verdict on the whole season, especially when the same kind of overreaction once followed the Dolphins' 70-20 rout of the Broncos in Week 3 in 2023.
The logic is simple: one game can show a lot, but it cannot prove much. A strong opener would be the preferred outcome, yet even a lopsided win would still sit low on the scale of what this rebuilding team needs. The bigger goal is not collecting one impressive Sunday and moving on. It is building enough across the season that the team looks different by the end than it did at the start.
That is also why the 0-17 question matters. If the Dolphins were to finish winless, the result would be bigger than any single loss because it would point to a season without progress. It would likely mean not enough young players became future contributors, and it would probably mean Malik Willis was not the answer at quarterback. Beyond the top overall pick, there would be nothing good to take from a year like that, and even that pick would be a bad place to begin a rebuild.
The tension is that the best-case result on Sunday still would not settle the hard questions. A blowout would be better than any alternative, but it would remain one game in a long evaluation. The Dolphins get the first chance to answer those questions against the Raiders on Sunday, and the real judgment will come from whether they look more complete as the year goes on, not from how loudly the opener lands.
