Aidan Hutchinson said Dan Campbell’s more serious offseason tone fit the moment, after the Detroit Lions fell short of the playoffs last year and walked into this week with a different edge. The defensive end said the change was not a surprise. It was what the team needed.
Hutchinson, who appeared on 97.1 The Ticket ahead of Week 1, said the Lions were in game week now and he could not wait for Sunday at Ford Field. That mattered because the opener against the New Orleans Saints is the first live test of whether the offseason reset carries into the season.
Campbell, in Hutchinson’s view, looked different this summer. The coach had more of a serious face than he did in years past, and Hutchinson said that made sense after a season that ended without a playoff berth. “Yeah, I’m all about it,” he said of the change, adding that when a team does not get where it wants to go, “some stuff has got to change.”
What stood out most, though, was that the tighter mood did not mean the work changed only in tone. Hutchinson said the Lions trusted Campbell’s approach and went through a tough, very physical camp. He also said the team worked even more than it had in past camps because there were no joint practices, and that extra work was “very beneficial.”
That is the part that complicates the easy read on Campbell’s new demeanor. A harder edge from the head coach can suggest a sharper push after disappointment, but Hutchinson’s account says the Lions were already being pushed hard on the field before Week 1 arrived. In other words, the seriousness was not just about how Campbell looked. It showed up in the volume and physicality of the work, too.
Hutchinson, a No. 2 overall pick, also did not appear in the preseason, leaving Sunday as the first real public look at how much of that camp can carry over when the games count. For him, the timing could not be better. “It’s always exciting,” he said, calling Week 1 full of buzz and saying he could not wait to be back at Ford Field on Sunday.
That is the real test now. The Lions spent the offseason trying to turn last year’s miss into something sharper, and Hutchinson’s comments suggest the locker room believes the response already began in camp. The only question left is whether the new tone shows up the way it matters most — when the Lions line up against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
