Rafael Espinoza now has a new opponent for October 31 in Riyadh after the WBO approved Ricardo Blandon as a late replacement for Lorenzo Parra. The switch came with only one week left before the fight, turning a planned title defense into a hurried reset for both camps.

The change keeps Espinoza’s featherweight defense on the schedule, but it also changes the shape of the bout at the last possible moment. Blandon entered the fight as the WBO’s No. 15 contender, and he is stepping into a world championship chance with little room for a full camp.

WBO president Gustavo Olivieri said Canelo Promotions informed the organization of the Middle East Professional Boxing Commission’s decision regarding Parra, and the advisory cited the commission’s rules, regulations, and policies as the basis for refusing his participation. The notice did not spell out why Parra was rejected, and it gave no basis for calling it a medical issue, a failed test or any other specific cause.

That leaves the most important unanswered point in the swap still hanging over the fight. Blandon has been approved, but he must still satisfy all applicable medical and regulatory requirements before the opening bell, while Espinoza’s camp shifts from preparing for Parra to preparing for a different opponent on short notice.

For Espinoza, the defense remains alive. For Blandon, the chance arrives fast and with little time to make it feel like a normal world title buildup.
