Devontez Walker was inactive for Sunday’s regular season opener in Indianapolis after a groin injury limited him in practice all week. For the Ravens, that meant another young receiver was unavailable at the exact moment the opener put every roster decision under a brighter light.
The absence matters because Walker had been competing for a larger role, and Sunday was the first real test of how that would hold up once the games counted. The Ravens entered the opener with Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman in the wideout rotation, while Ja'Kobi Lane, LaJohntay Wester and Chris Moore were also part of the group available to help fill the snaps Walker could not take.
Walker’s injury is not being described as season-ending, but the practical rule is simple: if a player is limited all week and then inactive on game day, he is not ready to contribute in that game. That leaves him with work to do before he can force his way back into the mix, especially with the Ravens opening the season and the receiver rotation already taking shape around the players who were available in Indianapolis.
The timing also lined up with other availability calls. Nnamdi Madubuike and Teddye Buchanan were ruled out on Friday, while Marlon Humphrey was questionable with an illness but will play. Alec Pierce will play for the Colts but reportedly will have a limited role, adding another layer to a game in which both sides had to adjust to who could handle a full workload.
That is where Walker’s night changes from a one-game absence into a short-term test of standing. The Ravens have already shown which receivers are in the opening rotation, and Walker now has to get healthy enough to rejoin that group rather than simply waiting for a spot to open. If the groin issue keeps him limited again, Sunday will look less like a one-off and more like the start of a setback he has to climb out of before his role can expand.
