For a team that wants to sort out its season early, left guard is not a side note. It is the one place where Week 1 can still change the plan rather than simply confirm it.
Petzing was asked about whether communication could become an issue with the rotation, and the answer was built around keeping both options in play. Mahogany has the slight edge because the Lions have invested in him and he showed flashes last season when healthy. Bartch offers a different kind of appeal. He is a low-risk, high-reward signing who gives Detroit another look at the spot, even though he missed preseason matches because of injury.
The Saints front gives the Lions a reason to keep sorting it out. Cam Jordan is out for the game, but Chase Young and Carl Granderson remain problems on the edge, which means the interior cannot drift while the outside pressure still exists. The left guard choice is less about a depth chart debate on paper than about whether the Lions can live with the answer they choose once the game starts.
That is what makes this more than a routine position battle. If Bartch can handle Week 1 after his injury layoff, the Lions may find a starting left guard for the season in the process.
