Aj Hill made his Arkansas debut Saturday night at No. 20 Utah, but the change at quarterback came too late to change the result. He entered with 12:47 left in the fourth quarter, after KJ Jackson had already been pulled in a 43-3 game, and Arkansas went on to lose 43-10 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
For anyone searching his name today, the reason is simple: Hill is now part of a quarterback discussion that did not end with the final whistle. He finished 8 of 14 for a touchdown and a 143.7 rating, a steadier line than Jackson’s 14 completions in 34 attempts, 139 yards, one interception and a 69.6 rating. But the numbers only framed a larger problem for Arkansas, which managed three points and four first downs in the opening half hour against Utah and has yet to look settled on offense.
The debut also came with a built-in caveat. Ryan Silverfield said he would probably stick with Jackson as the starter for next Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff against No. 2 Georgia, even while saying he has not made a final decision. He also said, in effect, that Hill showed enough to notice and not enough to force a full change. That leaves Arkansas in the same place it was before Saturday: searching for a quarterback who can steady a unit that struggled in the season-opening 31-14 win over North Alabama and then produced a 33-point loss in Salt Lake City.
There was one clean moment in the middle of the mess. Arkansas’s only touchdown came on a pass that bounced off a Utah defender’s hands and into the arms of Ismael Cisse, a play that said as much about fortune as it did about execution. Utah, meanwhile, has scored 20 or more points in the first half in seven of its past eight games, and Arkansas could not slow that pace once the game got away from it.
Silverfield said Arkansas has to be better in every part of the offense, and the timing of that demand matters. Hill’s first appearance arrived only after the game was already out of reach, which made the debut useful as a look but not decisive as a job interview. The next answer comes next Saturday against Georgia, and the only thing that looks certain is that the quarterback question is still open.
