Dan Campbell said Friday there is probably a good chance Christian Mahogany starts at left guard for the Detroit Lions on Sunday, a late-week shift in a competition that had been unsettled all week. The coach still stopped short of calling it final, but the update pointed Mahogany toward the opening lineup.
The timing matters because this is the week the Lions are trying to settle their starting five offensive linemen, and the left guard spot had been one of the last questions hanging over the opener against the New Orleans Saints. Campbell said earlier in the week that the job was still up for grabs and that Mahogany and Ben Bartch would split reps in practice while the staff watched for a clearer leader.
That was the clearest sign yet that the race had narrowed to two players and that Mahogany had moved into the front of it. Campbell said both players did a really good job in practice, which is why the answer was not automatic, but his Friday answer still leaned toward Mahogany. In plain terms, if the coach had seen a decisive edge, he could have named a starter. Instead, he left the door open while acknowledging that Mahogany was probably in line to begin the game.
The unresolved part is what happens after Sunday. Campbell had already said he would consider rotating the two in the game if no one separated himself, and the position could still remain in play beyond Week 1 depending on how it looks against the New Orleans Saints. That means the first snap is not necessarily the end of the decision, only the first test of whether Mahogany keeps the job or Bartch pushes it back into a week-to-week competition.
