College GameDay got a little more playful on Saturday when a fan held up a Texas-themed sign nodding to the Hulu series Chad Powers. The sign showed the character in a University of Texas jersey with the caption, “QB 2: Chad Powers.”
For viewers already looking ahead to the Ohio State Game, the reference landed because Chad Powers has become part of the football conversation beyond the screen. Glen Powell plays Russ Holliday in the series, a former college quarterback who changes his identity to Chad Powers in hopes of getting another shot at the spotlight.
That made the sign an easy fit for the moment on College GameDay, where the build-up to big Saturday matchups often turns into its own event. Texas and Ohio State were already drawing national attention, and anything tied to the teams was likely to get noticed before kickoff at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The sharpest part of the joke was also the part that gave it away: Chad Powers was not going to be on the field Saturday night. Instead, Arch Manning was set to lead No. 4 Texas against Julian Sayin and No. 1 Ohio State, a matchup that gave the sign its timing and its punch. The fan behind it was not identified, and the reason for choosing that specific image was left unsaid.
Even so, the message was clear enough for the day’s audience. The sign turned a streaming character into a football-sidewise wink at a major game, and it did it just as the matchup everyone had circled was about to begin.
