Vitor Matos has a defensive decision to make before Swansea City meet Burnley at 3pm, with Ben Cabango in line for another look or Stephen Welsh and Filip Lissah possibly kept together again. The question is not whether Swansea need stability. It is whether the back line that just went through Southampton can be trusted to start another match unchanged.
That is why the search around Swansea vs Burnley is really about one selection call. Cabango played the full match at Southampton, where Swansea conceded three goals, while Welsh and Lissah had been the centre-back pairing before that game and were part of a spell in which Swansea conceded one goal. Lissah even filled in at right back for Josh Key, which means the pairing did not only work in one lane; it gave Matos a usable option in more than one shape.
The balance is made sharper by the fact Cabango is the captain. A captain usually carries weight in a selection debate, especially after playing every minute of the last match. But Matos does not have the luxury of picking on status alone. If he wants the side that looked tighter before Southampton, the Welsh and Lissah partnership has the cleaner recent case. If he wants to restore the captain, he is asking for a quick defensive reset after a game that opened too easily.
Swansea's listed XI underlines how few obvious compromises there are elsewhere. Lawrence Vigouroux is set to start in goal, with Josh Key, Cabango, Welsh and Josh Tymon in the defensive group, and Marko Stamenic, Stephen Eustaquio, Melker Widell, Elijah Just, Moussa Yeo and Adam Idah ahead of them. For Matos, the simplest reading is also the most likely one: Swansea's best defence today may be the one that looked the most settled before Southampton. Cabango gives experience and authority, but Welsh and Lissah have already shown they can hold the line together, and the coach now has to decide whether that is worth preserving against Burnley or whether the captain comes straight back in.
