No. 18 Tennessee’s first road game of the season is set for Sept. 12, and the matchup comes with a clear forecast: a 27-13 win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. The game kicks at 7 p.m. ET on, and it arrives just one week after Tennessee opened with a 56-9 win over Furman.
That prediction lands now because Tennessee has already shown what it looks like at full speed, while Georgia Tech has already shown the first crack in its season. The Yellow Jackets were a seven-point favorite in Week 1 and still lost to Colorado by one point, failing to score an offensive touchdown in the process. For a program coming off a nine-win campaign in 2025, that kind of opening is more than a stumble; it is a warning that the offense has to find answers quickly.
Tennessee’s side of the matchup looks sturdier because the defense has another piece back in place. Arion Carter returned from a one-week suspension for violating NCAA rules against impermissible benefits and was part of a unit that handled Furman without him. Carter was Tennessee’s third leading tackler and tied for the second-most tackles for loss, and his return matters as the Vols step into a road game where field position and short drives can decide everything.
Georgia Tech, meanwhile, is trying to preserve a power running identity while rebuilding around major offseason turnover. The offense lost Keylan Rutledge, Haynes King and Buster Faulkner, then added 11 transfers to steady the group, but the opener showed how much work remains. Indiana transfer Alberto Mendoza completed 17 of 23 passes for 237 yards against Colorado, and transfer running back Justice Haynes averaged 3.4 yards per carry on 19 rushes, yet neither production translated into an offensive touchdown. That is the problem Tennessee can press: if Georgia Tech cannot turn possession into points, the Jackets will spend the night chasing a game they were expected to control.
Jim Knowles gave one more clue about how Tennessee plans to handle the trip, using Jeremiah Telander as an edge rusher against Furman and elevating Edwin Spillman into a starting role. Stephen Thompson’s forecast points to the shape of the game: Tennessee 27, Georgia Tech 13. If that holds, the Vols will leave Atlanta 2-0 and Georgia Tech will be forced to treat Sept. 12 as the night its season started asking harder questions than Week 1 did.
