Clemson Football Schedule: Tigers look to answer after LSU loss

Clemson gets its first shot to answer the LSU collapse on Saturday, and the setting makes the stakes plain. The Tigers return to Death Valley for their home opener after a 51-10 loss in Baton Rouge last weekend, and they are more than a 20-point favorite against Georgia Southern.

That spread is why the matchup is already on the Clemson Football Schedule radar for fans looking for a reset, but it is not just about the number on the betting board. Clemson’s play on both sides of the ball was poor against LSU, and Dabo Swinney needs a clean response from a team that looked disorganized when the game got physical.

Collin Sadler is expected back at right tackle after missing the LSU game, which matters because Matt Luke’s offensive line struggled badly in the opener. One return will not fix everything by itself, but it gives Clemson a defined starting point on the edge and a better chance to keep the pocket from collapsing the way it did last weekend.

Even so, this is not a game Clemson can treat as a walkthrough. Georgia Southern, coached by Clay Helton and coming from the Sun Belt Conference, has enough pieces to cause trouble if the Tigers repeat the same mistakes. Max Johnson is not as much of a runner as Sam Leavitt, but Clemson still has to account for movement, and that means Will Heldt and Jahiem Lawson have to be more of a factor setting the edge while Tom Allen’s unit avoids the breakdowns that LSU exposed.

The deeper problem for Clemson is that the LSU loss was not built on one bad play. Chris Vizzina threw a pick-six, missed Gideon Davidson on a wide-open wheel route that likely would have been a touchdown, and Tait Reynolds also made a mental mistake or two. On defense, Amare Adams and Andy Burburija need to be more disruptive, and the Tigers are still sorting through personnel questions with Markus Strong likely out for the season, Kourtney Kelly sidelined by an ACL injury and Vic Burley back at practice after a summer arrest.

That is why this home opener matters more than a typical nonconference game. If Clemson starts fast and controls Georgia Southern, the LSU blowout fades into the background quickly. If the Eagles hang around deep into the game, the crowd in Death Valley can turn restless in a hurry, and Swinney’s team will be forced to answer a harder question than the spread: whether the Tigers have actually fixed anything since Baton Rouge.
