Walmart Great Value Berry Recall Expands to 16 States

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded a frozen berry recall on September 3 to include Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend sold at Walmart stores in 16 states. The move added a mixed berry product to a recall that began in July with frozen blueberries made by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A.

That matters now because the recall is no longer limited to one berry type or one store chain. The Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend contains strawberries, blackberries and blueberries, and the FDA said the product was sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

The original July recall covered bags distributed to certain Publix locations, and the FDA issued an enforcement report on July 6 tied to that earlier action. By September 3, the agency had broadened the safety alert to another retailer and another label, showing the concern was not confined to the first product line. For shoppers, the practical change is simple: a recall that started with blueberries now reaches a frozen fruit blend sold under Walmart’s Great Value name.

The unease sits in the details. The FDA said there were no reported illnesses linked to the expanded recall as of the announcement, even though the berries were being pulled over potential E. coli contamination. That means consumers are being asked to act before the issue shows up in a hospital, which is the point of a food recall but also the part that makes it easy to dismiss until a product is already in the freezer.

The FDA said consumers should not eat the recalled berries and should throw them away or return them to Walmart for a full refund. Questions can be sent to [email protected] or 336-899-5612. The unresolved piece is not whether the recall exists. It is how many packages of the Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend reached shelves before the warning widened.
