Netflix is putting a bigger NFL football schedule on its service this season, with a slate of five games that is believed to cost as much as $500 million. The package includes a Christmas doubleheader, a Week 1 game from Australia on Thursday evening U.S. time, a Thanksgiving Eve contest and a Week 18 matchup expected to matter in the playoff race.
For viewers, the draw is simple: more live football in a place that already feels like home base for big events. Netflix has found that live NFL telecasts can move the needle. Two of its three biggest sign-up spikes since 2018 came around live NFL games in 2024 and 2025, and more than 1 million members joined across two Christmases. That is why the streamer is again using the league to make appointment viewing out of a platform built for on-demand habits.
The numbers also explain the push. Netflix’s live rights account for about 5% of its overall content spend even though live events make up only 1% of its viewing total hours. That gap is the story behind the schedule expansion. The company is spending heavily on a small slice of programming because those nights can deliver outsized attention, especially when the event is built around a league as durable as the NFL.
Netflix is not trying to copy a full-season sports network. Its approach has been to choose marquee one-off events, then dress them up so they feel different from an ordinary broadcast. The streamer has already used combat sports, comedy roasts and skyscraper climbing in that strategy, and it has leaned on names such as Beyoncé, Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson in past NFL broadcasts. Elle Duncan is part of that same commentary plan this season, as Netflix keeps adding a familiar football frame around a more theatrical presentation.
There is still a catch. Even with the spending and the headlines, the five-game slate leaves one major question hanging: which teams will be placed into that Week 18 matchup with playoff consequences. Netflix is expected to spend Thursday highlighting what makes its first regular-season NFL game in Australia distinct, but the final value of the schedule will depend on whether the late-season game lands with the kind of stakes that turn a streaming experiment into must-watch television.
