Rangers Vs Mariners: Seattle faces a near must-win series

The Mariners enter a three-game series against the Rangers with their season slipping toward the edge. Seattle lost three of four to the Athletics over the weekend and now sits at just 6.6% playoff odds, a number that leaves almost no room for another miss.

That is why this Rangers Vs Mariners series matters now. The Mariners would need to win close to 80% of their final 18 games just to get back to.500, and the Rangers are one of only two direct playoff-race opponents left on their schedule. If Seattle cannot take games here, the path gets narrower by the day.

The Rangers come in with more breathing room, but not much. Their playoff odds are 26.6%, and they have not made forward progress in either the AL West race or the AL Wild Card race since the beginning of August. They are four games under.500 since the All-Star break, have the tiebreaker over Cleveland and Toronto in the Wild Card race and already lost their season series against Houston, which means they need wins plus help from other teams to move up the standings.

Corey Seager has been one of the reasons Texas still looks alive. He was activated off the IL on July 31 and has hit five home runs since returning from his back injury, while posting a 139 wRC+. Ezequiel Duran filled in at shortstop while Seager was sidelined and has carried a 139 wRC+ since the All-Star break, with Wyatt Langford at 107 wRC+ and Brandon Nimmo at 106 wRC+ in the second half.

There is still a catch for Texas. Cal Quantrill has been sharp since June 23, with a 2.41 ERA and a 3.71 FIP across 12 starts and two relief appearances, and he has allowed just seven runs in 38 innings since the beginning of August. Cody Bradford had been productive in 2024 before an elbow injury led to an internal brace procedure in 2025, and Kumar Rocker has leaned more heavily on his death ball slider. The Rangers have enough pieces to stay in the chase, but the standings say they cannot control the race on their own. Seattle’s last real opening may be this series, and if the Mariners cannot take it, the playoff odds will start to feel less like a long shot and more like the final verdict.
